The Trees

Please excuse the mostly wordless nature of these next few posts about our road trip.  I'm having an especially hard time adjusting to being home, and as I scroll through my favorite images from the trip, it seems that indeed a picture is worth 1000 words.

Here's the "long story short" version:
We started in Seattle for a long weekend, drove through Portland to Bend, Oregon.  Cut over to the coast, and took our sweet ass time making our way through the Redwoods along the coast to San Francisco.

I left pieces of my heart scattered along the highways of the cost, and misty hillsides covered in weather beaten tress...It was a truly magical experience.

More Bracelet Love

Wrist adornments, created in the spirit of your oldest and most favorite treasures.  Forged from hefty Sterling wire,  and made with love.  These are going to be a permanent fixture on my arm from now on. Also, I should note that I gave myself a nice beating with the hammer on my index finger in the process of making these...totally worth it, I'm smitten.

I've got a zillion errands to check off my list before we leave town, so Aloha for now...

Bracelet Love

I've got some bracelet creations to share...finally!  They were born months ago, and languished in various states of completion on the bench, waiting.  I finally was happy with the patina after two tries, and here we are.

I've been on the bracelet train lately, and this afternoon I forged a handful of simple cuffs, in the same feeling as the Nomads that I've been making in earring form.  Bracelets are so fun to make!  I'm totally hooked, and I have a million ideas I can't wait to try out...I'm clocking out for now, happy Sunday!

My First Feature on a RAD blog!

I wanted to share with you this amazingness!  I'm so honored to be featured on the blog madebyandi.  I took the plunge and contacted Andi to see if she was interested in doing an interview with me, and what do you know, she said YES!  She is a wonderful resource for creative business owners of all kinds, offering up business advice, resources for maximizing business success, and other lovely design blog goodness.  This feature is 100% the result of me setting goals, and then doing the work necessary to make them happen...I've been trying to focus more on setting real, and achievable goals, putting myself "out there", and being specific about what I want.  When I say I want to broaden my audience, and gain more exposure for my art, it's so important that I follow through on that and MAKE IT HAPPEN, rather than waiting around for the magic to happen...I AM THE MAGIC!!!!

Ok, sorry for the tangent, I really just wanted to share the article with you so here it is...

Interview with Sierra Keylin Jewelry

[ 0 ]
I wasn’t familiar with Sierra Keylin’s jewelry line before she submitted her interview to me (p.s. you can send one too, click here for details) but man oh man, am I ever a new fan. We live very far apart from each other. I’m in Alberta, Canada and she’s in Honolulu, Hawaii – TOTALLY different climates!! But through reading her interview I feel like I know her, and you will too. Her words are honest and true. She speaks passion of her work. And through her descriptions you know that each and every piece that she makes has so much love and care put in to them.
It’s been my goal with this blog to share the commonality that we creatives all have in our lives, and really it’s the pursuit of being happy. It’s as simple as that. There are always bumps along the road, and Sierra is kind enough to share some of hers below, but the joy truly is in the journey and process. My favourite part is how she talks about Patti Smith’s book, Just Kids and how it really resonated with her – I’ve read that book too Sierra, and it really spoke to me as well! So, see what I mean about commonality?! Whether you’re from Canada or Hawaii or anywhere else for that matter, there’s just so much about us all that is the same. I’m sure you will also be able to relate to parts of Sierra’s journey. And it goes to show that we’re all in this together!
So I hope you will take the time to sit back and relax, grab a cup of tea and read this very lovely and inspiring  interview. Hope you enjoy…  xo, Andi

Tell us about where you live. What’s one amazing thing about Honolulu that if we were to visit, we’d have to see?
I’ve lived in Honolulu for almost 6 years now.  Of all the amazingly beautiful places here, one of my favorites isWaimanalo Beach, on the East side of the island.  The sand there, is like fine white powder, the ocean is bright turquoise blue, and the mountains are just on the other side of the main road…Tall, and jagged, and bright green with foliage.  I love floating around in the waves there and looking back to shore at the mountains.  The best part is on weekdays it’s virtually deserted, and I can let my dog run like crazy on the beach.
Tell us about your business, what you make, your price range for products, and how long you’ve been doing it for. Also, are you selling full-time or part-time?
I’ve been making Sterling Silver jewelry since 2007 when I took my first metalwork class at the Honolulu Academy of Art.  I work primarily in sterling silver and often use semi-precious stones and beads in my designs. The stones I use are all one of a kind, untreated, and cut by various lapidary artists around the country. All shaping, forging, sawing, and finishing is done by hand one piece at a time-ensuring that each piece is as unique as the individual who claims it.  I like to create simple, classic pieces, as well as showstoppers with huge or colorful stones.  My jewelry usually ranges between $34-$200 depending on the piece.  Up until very recently I have maintained a full-time “real” job as well as building my business.  It has been my dream since the beginning of Sierra Keylin Jewelry to be able to focus solely on my art.  I was recently laid off from my job, and am looking forward to making the plunge to full time silversmith!!! (totally freaked out, and super excited !!!!)

What are the key ways you are currently using to make money?
I sell my work exclusively through Etsy right now.  I’ve done quite a few local craft shows, markets, and trunk shows in the past, but am taking a break from that right now and trying to figure out the best way to get my work more exposure.
What is your #1 source of income and why do you think that is? How have things changed for you since you started? How has your business grown and expanded?
I got really serious about my Etsy shop about a year ago and started devoting a lot more time to it.  It takes a lot of time to build a strong audience, and I’m still figuring out the best way to bring success to my business.  I’ve made great relationships with other designers and makers. I think those connections have encouraged me and my business.  As a one woman show, and on a very limited budget,  I’ve been able to “open up shop” in a way that supports the unique nature of my work. Etsy has been wonderful for me, and I hope that it continues to be.

What is one thing you wish you knew when you started your business?
When I started I had no idea that product photography could be so challenging and gratifying at the same time… Some days I can’t get a single good shot of my new work, and other days, I’m so incredibly proud of the way the images have turned out.
What is the best thing about running your own business?
I think the most amazing thing about where I’m at right now is that I’m so excited every time I sit down to make something.  Once all the hammering, soldering, sanding, finishing, and stone setting is done, I get to hold in my hand something beautiful that I made.  The idea that someone else will not only like it also, but want to spend their hard earned dollars on it blows me away!!!!  I get so excited when I’m wrapping up packages and sending them out in to the world. I wonder about the lady that will wear the piece, and am so incredibly grateful.  (Woah… I got really excited there, can you tell?)

What is something that you still find you struggle with?
Something I still struggle with is believing that I CAN do this!  It is so important to maintain a positive outlook, and to believe in myself, but it’s not sunshine and rainbows everyday… There are days when I’ll ruin something I’m working on, or like I said before, my pictures are awful, and I feel like I’m just making it all up as I go along. Somethings though, that’s the best part.  That I can turn this business in to anything I want.  The hardest thing sometimes is just not feeling overwhelmed by all the hats you have to wear as a creative business owner.  Production, design, packaging, mailing, emails, marketing, advertising, bill collecting, bill paying… But then, I’ll check my email and see that I sold something and I’ll have a HUGE smile on my face all day!  And then, all that doubt, and fear is totally worth it!
Did you have to deal with any naysayers in your life with regards to starting your business (people who didn’t fully support or “get” it)?
I’ve been so lucky to have the most amazing supportive family.  My mom and Dad have been so encouraging, they’re my biggest fans.  Between my parents,  my closest friends, and my partner Jo cheering me on, I always felt like I really could make this happen. They’ve often been more sure of my success than I have, as self doubt creeps in, and I question if I really have what it takes to make a business out of my craft.

What are some future goals you have with regards to expanding your business?
Of course I’ve been in love with the process of working with metal since my first class 5 years ago.  I’ve plotted, planned, designed, forged, and produced every piece of jewelry with the idea that each piece is getting me closer to the goal of being a full-time artist.  I have so many dreams for my business, including making it to the mainland for some of the bigger craft shows.  For the first time ever, I actually sat down to make a list of goals for the future of my business.  I’d like to attend Renegade Craft Fair in LA and San Francisco, as well as the UniqueLA show next year.  I love living in Hawaii, yet there aren’t those types of events here,  I would love the chance to get the kind of exposure that comes with attending one of these awesome events, and see where it can take my brand.  Another big dream is to do one of the smaller trade shows and really develop a core “line” of jewelry, so that in addition to the one of a kind pieces I can do some production work as well.
Can you share a great biz tip with us?
The one and only tip I can give, is advice gleaned from reading Patti Smith’s book, Just Kids, which I think every creative person/maker/artist should read.  Her basic premise is simple, just do the work you love. Whatever your medium, work it… Don’t think of who’s going to buy it, and the end result, but especially in times of doubt, lose yourself in your process, and remember why you started doing it in the first place.  The simple act of making work, is getting you closer to your goal, every piece you make, every moment you are in your studio, you’re getting better.  You’re vision is becoming more yours, and you are becoming more a part of your art.  Okay, maybe that wasn’t exactly a “business” tip, but you get the idea…

For the Love of Turquoise

I think it started when I was a kid.  When we'd visit my grandparents, I always wanted to head straight to my grandmothers dressing area and dig through her treasures.  She'd let me stand on a chair so I could peer inside her top dresser drawer, one of those tallboy dressers, with six or seven drawers.  That top drawer was better than a sandbox, more fun than a box of toys...It was filled with jewelry.  I would pull out my favorites and start piling everything on.  She would look over my shoulder and tell me that she really liked the ones I picked, and didn't they look so fancy all together.  At some point we'd end up sitting on the edge of her bed, I would ask her about the rings or bracelets, wondering about what the stones were, and she would start to tell me the stories of where the different pieces had come from.   Much of her jewelry was a gift from my grandfather.  I have never met a man who loves to shop the way he did...especially for jewelry.  I think it's in my genes.  In addition to the fancier jewels, with gold and sparkly bits, he had a huge love of Native American jewelry, specifically the work of a few artists in and around where they were living at the time in Arizona.  Now, you know where this is heading...Turquoise was always around.  He had his own impressive collection of chunky silver and stone jewelry.  Huge chunks of turquoise set into rings, which he sported on his pinky, cuff bracelets overflowing with brightly colored chunks of blue and green earth.  I remember asking him if I could put one of his rings on and how they were so big they fit like a donut around my finger. Slipping it on, feeling its weight and coolness, staring at the brightly colored stone, there was some kind of a connection happening.  Even then I wondered about who made it, and how that was even possible!

All these years later, when I sit down to start working on a project, and open up my box of stones, I always reach for the turquoise first.  So there I was last Sunday, all jazzed up with inspiration and fired up to make some awesome shit!  I had a leisurely cup of coffee, and sat down with intention at my bench, and it was one of those beautiful days of work, where the inspiration and the fabrication came together with ease, and a I didn't even have to curse while soldering anything!!!! (for those of you who are not makers of silvery things, just so you know, it doesn't come easy, and sometimes it's necessary to swear loudly at your work to make everything come together properly).

So here we have a bit of the bounty from Sundays work day...

From right to left we have Sleeping Beauty turquoise, and Nacozari turquoise with awesome flecks of silvery goodness in the matrix.

This latest work is what I hope will be the beginning of a series of pieces inspired by all those old rings and things I felt connected to so long ago.  Infused with my love of old turquoise jewelry, and build by hand with the intention of being worn and loved for a lifetime, and then passed on down the line like some of my favorites.  I hope whomever claims these will love them as much as I do, and that they will feel some kind of connection to them...

Turquoise makes me happy, I hope some of that happy ends up with you.

Water Dog

For our anniversary last month, I gave Jo a Gopro camera for all of her surf adventures. It's quite an amazing little piece of equipment, and takes awesome videos. When we went swimming with Max last weekend she shot this little video. Underwater doggie legs are just about the cutest thing ever!

A Quick Preview

I've been wanting to make bracelets forever.
I kept putting it off.
I ordered the materials.
I put them in a drawer.
One day, much later on I had bracelet day in the studio.
I made some RAD bracelets.
That was three weeks ago.
I CANNOT get any good pictures of the darn bracelets.
Except one...

One of my favorite cuffs is one my mom gave to me years ago, its textures show years of wear, first her, and now me wearing it.  I wanted to put that kind of feeling in to this piece, to make something that someone can have for a lifetime, and love more and more over time.  I'm smitten with Kingman Turquoise...I made myself a promise that I wouldn't buy any more until I used up all I had, and this is the last piece.  You better believe my cozy time tonight will envolve lots of browsing for new stones.

Happy Thursday/Independence Day/Bonus Day off (for me)!!!!

Monday is my Sunday

My new work schedule at the "real job" leaves me with Sunday and Monday off, and I LOVE it!  Something about Monday being my Sunday is a really beautiful thing...

Here are a few beautiful things from my day off solo adventure...I took max, a backpack, and a small cooler, and drove up to the North Shore.

Before we left the house I grabbed an Apple Banana from our
recently harvested bunch:

Max and I were beat after our first of three beach stops, so we pulled over for some Poke
at the place that always has the best on the island Kahuku Superette.  If you like fish, if you like tuna, then you'll love poke...it's kind of like the official food item of Hawaii.  If you go to a party, there's poke, if you go to the beach, you bring poke, if there's a BBQ at someones house, the park, or the beach, there's always poke.  I'm not a big drinker, but poke and beer are good friends, trust me...

We took a long walk through the neighborhood, Max met a few dog friends, and I indulged one of my favorite hobbies, checking out houses and landscaping...I don't know why but I've always love exploring different neighborhoods, daydreaming about houses, and gardens, and playing the "if it was my house" game.  When I was a kid, we would take walks around our streets at night after dinner, and my mom and I would always end up talking about the houses...

I strategically chose us a secluded spot for the rest of the afternoon.  The beaches on this part of the island get very crowded, especially in the summertime, but after six years of living here I know all the secret spots where there are very few people :)
Max and I swam for a while, he played with some kids on the beach, and then we plopped our butts in the sand and settled in for some sunset appreciation...I was so zen, and then inspiration struck, and I had to start scribbling jewelry ideas in the book I was reading!  LOVE it when that happens...It's rare that I sketch out my designs ahead of time, but when it's flowing, you gotta get that shit down on paper!

All in all a wonderful way to close out one week and start another...Sometimes a solo day is just what the Dr. ordered, I just need to listen to my inner doctor and get it done more often.  Every time I take a day like this and just drive wherever the moment takes me, I feel so revived.  I'd been feeling restless in my routine for a few weeks, so this was just the perfect remedy.

Happy Wednesday all!  I'm finally getting a haircut with a new lady tomorrow and I'm super excited!  It's been a chore and a half to find a good haircut out here, so fingers crossed...
